JonBenet press conference

Boulder DA Mary Lacy (who KHOW's Dan Caplis says he doesn't trust--a point in her favor) has started the JonBenet press conference.

Double whut-oh: Lacy says news leaked before the case was completely ready, apparently forcing her to move for fear that Karr would flee.

International police work done over months. "There is much more work to be done."

"Many circumstances for making an arrest before the case is
complete. . . ."

Thanking everybody and introducing everybody else on Earth . . .

"Little to be said about an on-going investigation . . ."

Questions: Can't hear them! For f'ck's sake.

Lacy: This is early in the investigation. Can't discuss forensic tests . . . or anything related to evidence in the case . . .

Exigent circumstances may change timing of a case, but I can't comment on this one.

I just simply can't take any more questions . . . .

And that's it?

What a bust.

Dan Abrams on MSNBC: Translation: this investigation is at an early stage; all they have is Karr's statements. No DNA match yet. No charges yet. Sounds like they don't have enough. In high-profile case you get wackos coming out of the woodwork.

Denver KHOW's Tom Martino: They wasted time and money holding this press conference.

Jeralyn Merritt of Talkleft on MSNBC: How long can Lacy hold Karr without charges? She (Lacy) makes it sound like he was such a threat that they had to move. I think the investigation must be farther along than they're letting on . . . .

Dan Caplis, asked why they even bothered with a press conference: Mary Lacy wanted to get on TV. He really doesn't like her. This is sounding considerably less cut and dried than it did at first.

Caplis' partner Craig Silverman: Michael Tracey has a dog in this fight. Trying to sell a book . . . Doesn't have a dog in this fight, he has an elephant . . . Silverman also thinks the prosecution has more. Tracey won't turn over the e-mails Karr sent him . . . .

Merritt on MSNBC again: Maybe they got to compare Karr's handwriting with the ransom
note . . . .

Caplis: Karr confessed to things that clearly aren't true (such as that he drugged JonBenet). That ain't reassuring. . . .

Stephen Singular on MSNBC: The ignored part of the story is that it wasn't law enforcement that was making progress in the case, but citizens . . . . I think there are multiple suspects and he (Karr) might have information. There are a number of people who have bits and pieces of knowledge about this case . . . . Weird.

Trip DeMuth, former Boulder deputy DA: I'm worried. Lacy was apologetic . . . . I'm concerned they haven't done any of their homework before arresting this man . . . . It's very easy for a person (Karr) to act like they know more than they do when all this information has been released . . . .

Michael Tracey: Oops, missed it.

Caplis: This is a DA with very bad judgment. She really hurt herself today. She should have just issued a press release. . . .

Trip DeMuth on MSNBC again: I'm concerned that she (Lacy) doesn't have enough . . .

Boy, the Bangkok police sure dressed Karr like a perv (unless they're his clothes, of course). I mean, give me a break: white Hi-Waister™ pants and a pastel-blue shirt with Peter Pan collar? Even the ultra-manly D-blog would look like a perv in that getup.

Henry "Something wrong" Lee on MSNBC: Karr say he drug girl, no drugs found; he say he sexually assault girl, no evidence sexual penetration. Something may be wrong . . . .

Caplis: More Lacy-bashing. Quotes CourtTV that the Boulder DA's office might be setting itself up for embarrassment . . . .

Caplis brings up Lacy's involvement in the CU football rape case, but I don't know what her involvement was. Caplis was a CU apparatchik in that one, so take it for what it's worth.

Roswell, Georgia police holding a press conference now, also to say that they can't say anything. Great. MSNBC: "Roswell, GA police: We are not at liberty to discuss arrest details."

Oh no! MSNBC switched to Mel Gibson's arraignment or whatever! They've got a helicopter on the scene! Oh well. Maybe he'll go nuts like he did on The Simpsons: "All in favor, say die!"

Whew, MSNBC back on topic: Skepticism seems to be growing. Some forensics guy (Cyril Wecht) is saying Karr appears to be a "voluntarily false" confesser. Need DNA, physical evidence, handwriting . . . . There were no drugs involved, he "did not use South American toad" to paralyze JonBenet . . . . There was no rape, but I do believe there was digital penetration . . . .

Mel again: No contest to D.U.I, three years' probation. Alcoholics Anonynous for three months, $1300 or something like that in fines.

Britney Spears like you've never seen her! Man, I'm losing it.

My ex-brother-in-law: "It's like a David Lynch movie!"
